It’s been brewing in early access for over three years, which, yeah, might seem like an eternity, but considering the sheer ambition of the game, it kind of makes sense.
I’m guessing you’re already pretty clued up on the game itself, so let’s skip the basics and jump straight into what you really came here for—modding this bad boy on PC.
Before You Get Started
Good news—you don’t need to be a tech wizard to mod Baldur’s Gate 3. You just need to follow three basic steps:
- Find where your BG3 game and save files are located.
- Download and install a Mod Manager. Trust me, using a mod manager makes life so much easier, even though you technically can do it without one.
- Download and install the mods you want. Then, just fire up the game and enjoy your tweaks!
One quick tip before you start: It’s always a smart move to back up your game files before you start modding, just in case something goes haywire.
Step 1 – Install the BG3 Mod Manager
Let’s kick things off by getting the BG3 Mod Manager installed.
Sure, you could drop mods directly into the game’s mod folder and mess with a few files, but why make things harder on yourself?
The mod manager is designed to do all that heavy lifting for you, so you can focus on the fun stuff.
Visit this GitHub link to grab the latest version of the BG3 Mod Manager.
Download the zip file, extract it, and then stash that folder somewhere you can easily get to later.
Step 2 – Download Desired Mod files
Next up, it’s time to snag some mods. The internet’s got plenty of options, but Nexus Mods is where you want to go for the good stuff.
Even while BG3 was still in early access, the modding community was hard at work, so you’ll find plenty to choose from.
Just hop over to Nexus Mods and search for Baldur’s Gate 3.
When you find a mod that tickles your fancy, head to the “Files” tab, and hit “Manual Download.”
If you’re not logged in, Nexus will prompt you to sign in—go ahead and do that, then grab the mod file.
Step 3 – Install Mods Using the BG3 Mod Manager
Once your mod file is downloaded, unzip it.
Inside, you’ll find a file with a “.pak” extension—this is the magic file that makes your mod work. Copy that file, then navigate to %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur’s Gate 3\Mods, and paste it there.
Now, open up the BG3 Mod Manager (remember where you saved that earlier?).
Run “BG3ModManager.exe,” and you’re all set!
Step 4 – Play the Game
With your mods installed, it’s time to see them in action!
Launch Baldur’s Gate 3 through the Larian launcher.
Most mods start working in right away when you load your game.
But some of them might need you to reload your save file.
