If you’re a Baldur’s Gate 3 fan on PS5 and you’ve been toying with mods, you should steer clear of the “Evelyn’s Sweetheart” shotgun mod. This was supposed to be a fun addition has turned into a nightmare for many players, causing game crashes and even making some players unable to reinstall the game altogether.
As soon as word got out, players flocked to social media to warn others about the game-breaking bug, urging folks to avoid downloading the mod on consoles.
The Baldur’s Gate 3 devs over at Larian Studios quickly chimed in, admitting the mod shouldn’t have passed their testing in the first place.
They’re now advising players to uninstall it to avoid further chaos.
But How Did This Mod Slip Through the Cracks?
The whole ordeal started when Redditor BladeC96 posted a PSA in the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, alerting PS5 players about the shotgun mod’s glitchy behavior.
The mod, which hit consoles on October 19 via mod.io, had already been downloaded over 14,000 times before anyone realized something was wrong. For many players, uninstalling the mod isn’t enough to stop the game from freezing or endlessly restarting.
Larian didn’t waste time addressing the issue, but the explanation doesn’t exactly make the situation better.
Community moderator SaloAtLarian shared that the mod, which alters shaders, failed the studio’s “curation testing” due to its compatibility issues.
They’ve since yanked it from consoles and Mac, but that doesn’t help the players still locked out of their saved files.
Mods usually keep things fresh for another run through a game, but this shotgun mod fiasco is the latest reminder that not all mods are a smooth ride, especially for console users.
While PS5 players are bearing the brunt of the crashes, Xbox users have also reported problems, though they seem to be able to switch campaigns as long as the shotgun mod isn’t active.
On Reddit, players’ reactions ranged from frustration to jokes.
One commenter quipped that the game must “know you disrupted the timeline and the DM won’t allow guns!”.
Light humor aside, the fact that a community-driven mod could cause this much chaos has some PS5 owners wondering if mods are even worth the risk.
Can Larian Studios Patch Things Up?
While mods are often community-driven projects, Larian does have a process for reviewing them to keep game-breaking bugs at bay.
Somehow, though, this shotgun mod dodged the usual checks and went live. And as much as fans are upset, many are still cutting Larian some slack given the studio’s small size and the incredible success of Baldur’s Gate 3 this year.
For now, console players are being advised to uninstall the shotgun mod and reach out to Larian’s support team if they’re still having issues.
Mods that mess with shaders usually don’t play well on consoles, as SaloAtLarian explained, which makes this shotgun mod a risky install for anyone except the PC Gamers.
