The Until Dawn Remake Is Having a Rough Time on PC—What Went Wrong?

If you were hoping to relive the chills of Until Dawn on your Gaming PC, you might want to hold off for a bit. The remake which is powered up with Unreal Engine 5, has been struggling big time on PC. People are not happy, and it’s pretty obvious why—there are more bugs than scares.

Let’s take a quick trip back to when things were better. Until Dawn originally dropped in 2015 on the PlayStation 4, and man, it was everything horror fans wanted—eight friends stuck in a cabin, creepy things lurking in the dark, and your choices deciding who makes it out alive.

Now fast forward to 2024, and the remake has arrived, but instead of delivering those same chills with next-gen visuals, it’s just… kinda falling apart.

Players on Steam are also not lining up. For example, On launch day, only 2,067 people were playing it at the same time.

That’s tiny compared to the other PlayStation blockbusters that made the jump to PC. Games like Ghost of Tsushima and God of War were practically printing money on Valve’s platform, but you can’t say same about Until Dawn.

So what’s scaring players off? Well, it’s not the monsters in the game—it’s the bugs and weird changes. According to the reviews, stuff like ray tracing and DLSS just doesn’t work. The lighting is so glitchy, it’s like the characters are living inside a strobe light.

Oh, and then there’s the soundtrack swap, which ticked off a lot of the die-hard fans.

Then, there’s the cherry on top: the game requires you to link up with your PlayStation Network account, even if you’re on PC. PC Gamers hate that.

Like, seriously, why do we need to connect to PSN when we are playing on Steam?

Well, that’s exactly what Steam players were asking when Sony made PSN mandatory to play God of War: Ragnarok on PC. Now, They did it again, completely ignoring any complaints from PC gamers.

Devs are Aware of issues

The devs over at Ballistic Moon are aware of the issues and did what most studios do—posted a big ol’ “we’re sorry” on Steam.

They’re asking players to report bugs with all the nitty-gritty details, like which version of the game they’re playing and what kind of PC setup they’ve got.

They’ve even admitted that some of the key features like HDR and AMD’s FSR frame generation settings are on the fritz.

Yeah, you’re basically beta testing at this point.

But even if they fix the majority of bugs, don’t expect the game to fully shape up. Sure The graphics issues and performance problems get patched in an upcoming update—if the devs are willing.

But things like the old, nostalgic soundtrack are not coming back. Same goes for the PSN account requirement. And does Looks like Sony’s really doubling down on that one—it’s becoming standard for all their games now.

So for now, if you’re thinking of grabbing Until Dawn on PC, you’ll probably have to deal with these headaches.

Judging by the “mixed” reviews on Steam, plenty of fans aren’t thrilled. So I Guess we’ll have to wait and see if future updates can rescue this horror classic from turning into a horror story itself.
