Everything You Need to Know About Solas: The Dread Wolf’s Secrets Before Dragon Age: The Veilguard

If you’ve ever played Dragon Age, you probably know that BioWare loves giving mage companions the limelight, sometimes more than the rest of the party. And honestly, who could forget Solas in Inquisition? From the moment you meet him, there’s something off about this guy. He’s quiet, mysterious, and spends way too much time in the Fade. I mean, how did we not see his big reveal coming?

As we gear up for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, dropping on October 31, 2024 (Halloween night, perfect for a game full of demons, right?) it’s high time we talk about who Solas really is and what kind of chaos he might unleash.

Whether you’re a veteran Dragon Age fan still nursing the emotional wounds of Solas’ betrayal, or you’re brand new and have no idea who this pointy-eared troublemaker is, buckle up.

Becouse here, we’ll discuss everthing about him.

So, Who is Solas, Really?

Remember when you first met Solas in Inquisition?

He strolls in, this calm, somewhat nerdy apostate mage, claiming he’s just a guy who likes wandering the wilderness and poking around in the Fade.

Sure, sounds legit.

But then, the more you talk to him, the more cryptic he gets. You start asking yourself, “Is this dude hiding something, or does he just need to get out more?”

Spoiler alert: It’s definitely the first one.

Solas doesn’t align with the Dalish or the City elves, and instead, he talks about the Fade like it’s some magical summer camp he’s super into.

While most folks in Thedas see the Fade as a nightmare zone filled with demons, Solas seems almost too comfortable with it.

And let’s be real: someone that cozy with a realm of spirits and monsters is bound to have some skeletons in the closet.

Solas: Friend, Mage, or Frenemy?

Ah, Solas. The guy you thought was your ride-or-die mage buddy, only to find out he’s been playing the long con.

It all starts when he helps stabilize the Anchor—the funky green magic mark you get on your hand after surviving an explosion.

You don’t know it yet, but you’re basically wearing a ticking time bomb that only Solas (or someone much, much worse) can control.

Fast forward a bit, and you find yourself fighting Corypheus, a megalomaniac who’s trying to tear down the Veil and release a horde of demons onto the world.

No big deal, right? Solas, naturally, joins you in the fight. But here’s where things start getting dicey.

After you defeat Corypheus and destroy the magical Orb of Destruction (not ominous at all), Solas bounces.

No goodbye, no thank you. Just gone. Classic.

The Dread Wolf Revealed

You think it’s all over, the Inquisition saved the day, right?

Well, not so fast. After the credits roll, BAM, plot twist!

Dread Wolf

In a cutscene, Solas meets up with Flemeth (you know, that ancient Witch of the Wilds who’s been hanging around since Dragon Age: Origins).

And, surprise surprise, she’s not just some mystical old lady—she’s actually Mythal, an elven goddess.

Oh, and by the way, she calls Solas the Dread Wolf.

That’s the moment when we know that our mage buddy is actually Fen’Harel, the god of betrayal?! Yep.

That’s the kind of twist that makes you drop the controller and rethink everything you just played.

Turns out, Solas has been pulling the strings the whole time.

He’s the one who created the Veil in the first place, locking away the other elven gods because they were all terrible people (or gods, I guess?).

And now, he wants to tear the Veil down and restore his people to their former glory.

Good intentions, I guess? But it’s like giving someone a bazooka to crack open a walnut—way overkill.

Solas’ Betrayal – The Twist We Didn’t See Coming (But Totally Should Have)

Looking back, how did we not see this coming? Solas was always too knowledgeable, too secretive.

I still remember the moment I first realized he was the Dread Wolf.

It felt like that friend who ghosted you for months only to show up at your birthday with a cake and say, “Oh, by the way, I’ve been plotting world domination.”

If you romanced Solas as an elven Inquisitor, I’m sorry, but this one had to hurt. It’s like getting your heart broken in slow motion.

You could feel him pulling away, even though he seemed so curious, so fascinated.

Just when you think he’s about to let you in, he shuts the door in your face. Then, when Trespasser DLC drops, he cuts all ties.

Even when you offer to help him, he’s like, “Nah, I’m good. Gonna destroy the world now, catch you later.”

What Does Solas’ Plan Mean for The Veilguard?

So here we are, staring down Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Solas is officially the big bad.

His plan? Tear down the Veil, unleash chaos, and restore the elves to their former glory.

It sound all well and good Elves sure But… there’s a catch.

If Solas succeeds, Thedas might not survive.

The Veil is all that stands between the physical world and the Fade.

Imagine ripping down the walls of your house and suddenly you’re living with the elements—a bit dramatic, but you get the idea.

Without the Veil, demons could overrun the world, and Thedas would be in for a very bad time.

Can anyone stop him? I mean, we’ve fought worse (Corypheus anyone?), but Solas is on a whole other level.

Even if you romanced him, you’re probably not sweet-talking him out of this one, or perhaps you might will we don’t know what will happen in Veilguard yet.

What About Our Old Inquisitor?

Now, here’s a burning question: Will the Inquisitor show up in The Veilguard? It’d be pretty epic to see your old character, even just for a moment.

Imagine having a heart-to-heart with Solas before the final showdown. Or, maybe just yelling at him for abandoning you after everything you’ve been through.

However, players will step into the shoes of a new character, Rook—fully customizable, of course.

We don’t know much about Rook yet, but judging by the trailers, they’re in for one heck of a ride.

Varric’s back (yay!), along with Lace Harding. But even Varric, with all his charm and trusty crossbow Bianca, can’t seem to catch a break.

Solas literally destroys Bianca in one of the trailers, and man, that moment hurt.

Solas’ Future: Friend or Foe?

After waiting for long time The Veilguard is going to be a wild ride, especially with Solas at the other helm.

Will we be able to stop him? Could there be a sliver of hope in changing his mind? (Honestly, doubtful, but hey, we can dream.)

What happens if he succeeds? Will tearing down the Veil bring peace to the elves or destroy Thedas? These are the questions keeping me up at night.

But one thing’s clear: come October 31st, we’re about to get some answers.
