When Dragon Age: The Veilguard was first revealed, some fans weren’t sure what to think. But now, with more details trickling in, a lot of that doubt has morphed into straight-up hype.
Why? Because this game is taking us to the northern half of Thedas. Here epic locales like Minrathous, Weisshaupt, and even Arlathan are on the map.
This time around, you’re stepping into the shoes of Rook, an agent hired by Varric and the Inquisition (remember those guys?).
Your mission is Track down Solas, a.k.a. the Dread Wolf, before he makes an elven mess of everything. Sounds intense, right? Trust me, it’s about to get even more complicated.
Who Is Rook?
Rook isn’t just any ol’ character. You’re not only going to shape his choices but also choose his backstory.
Each one of his possible backgrounds is tied to a faction, and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love picking sides? More importantly, your faction will affect how the rest of Thedas sees you.
Depending on where you come from, you’ll open up exclusive dialogue options, special interactions, and potentially cause some serious drama with NPCs.
The Six Faction Backgrounds in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard feature Six faction background for your character.
Each of these background gives Rook a rebel edge—kinda like when you break gaming rules to explore hidden areas, but on a grander scale.
Every choice you make will affect how factions react to you, how companions bond with you, and what secrets you uncover. And trust me, those choices are gonna come back to bite you—or save you.
Here is the more detail on each of these Factions –
Breaker of Bonds (Shadow Dragons)
Here your Rook is a foundling—plucked from the streets and raised in a military family. He’s joined the Shadow Dragons, a group that fights for change in the shadows of Minrathous.
One day, while on a mission to guard a dignitary, Rook decided, “You know what? Let’s throw caution to the wind.” So, he sneaks into Venatori-controlled zones to rescue some slaves.
His actions didn’t go unnoticed. The Venatori now have their eye on him, and the Shadow Dragons are like, “Rook, maybe lay low for a while.”
Shield Against the Night (Grey Wardens)
Now, if you choose the Grey Wardens, Rook is tasked with holding the line during a major darkspawn attack. But Rook, being Rook, isn’t about to let innocent villagers die while waiting for reinforcements.
He disobeys orders, seals a tunnel to the Deep Roads, and single-handedly turns the tide of battle. Of course, not everyone’s happy about it.
The younger Wardens are cheering him on, but some of the higher-ups, especially those with noble ties, are giving him serious side-eye.
So, Rook takes a step back, letting tempers cool down—smart move if you ask me.
Assassin Extraordinaire (Antivan Crows)
If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a shady group of assassins (c’mon, we all have), this is your pick. As a new member of the Antivan Crows, Rook’s pretty fearless—maybe a little too fearless.
When he sees a group of Antaam soldiers herding captives, he doesn’t hesitate to leap into action. While he saves the day, his actions mess up a larger Crow operation. Oops.
Naturally, the higher-ups aren’t thrilled, and Rook is benched.
Defender of the Dead (The Mourn Watch)
Raised by necromancers after being found as a baby in a crypt (talk about a creepy origin), Rook joins The Mourn Watch, protectors of the dead.
In a civil war between undead nobility, Rook leads a daring strike that quells the conflict. Of course, destroying undead nobles is controversial—some think he went too far. Honestly, it’s like that time you destroy a boss and everyone’s like, “Uh, was that overkill?”
Fearing he’s ruffled some feathers, the order sends Rook on a “vacation.” Time to see the world and figure out where he really belongs.
Seeker of Gold and Glory (Lords of Fortune)
Rook is a treasure hunter and rising star among the Lords of Fortune. He’s a skilled tomb raider, but when a mission goes south and he has to kill a Rivaini noble to stop an ancient evil, things get…complicated.
Sure, he saved lives, but Rivaini nobles aren’t exactly thrilled.
His quick thinking prevents disaster, but some people are still mad. So, to avoid even more heat, Rook lays low, plotting his next adventure.
Hunter of Secrets (The Veil Jumpers)
Finally, we have the Veil Jumpers. These guys live on the edge, exploring ancient ruins for lost lore. Rook leads an expedition into Arlathan Forest, where his team stumbles across a map to hidden treasures.
But after nearly getting everyone killed by magical traps, Rook chooses to save his team instead of the treasure. This was Heroic, right?
But while almost everyone praises him for saving lives, some aren’t too happy about losing that priceless map.
So, What Kind of Rook Will You Be?
With six epic backgrounds to choose from, your decisions will shape Rook’s back story in ways that could change the course of Dragon Age history.
Will you play as the bold hero, taking risks and defying authority? Or will you keep your head down, carefully navigating the political web of Thedas? Whatever you choose, one thing’s for sure—Rook’s story is about to get real interesting.
