So, the cat’s out of the bag—Sony’s finally confirmed what we’ve all suspected for a while: the PlayStation 5 Pro is real.
Mark Cerny made it clear that Sony’s goal with this mid-gen upgrade is all about delivering those silky-smooth frame rates we love.
And, well, who doesn’t want that?
So What’s New in PS5 Pro?
The PS5 Pro is going to set you back $700, doesn’t come with a disc drive (no more frantically searching for that lost Blu-ray!), and it’s hitting shelves this November.
Mark Cerny spilled the beans during a PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation.
He let us in on why Sony decided to go for this mid-gen refresh—it’s all about giving you those silky-smooth, high frame rates we crave.
The GPU’s been beefed up, ray tracing is now supercharged, and they’ve thrown in some fancy custom hardware for machine learning called PSSR, which basically boosts the resolution in games.
In other words, it’s a powerhouse.
Now, if you’ve been keeping an eye on those leaks that’ve been floating around, the PS5 Pro’s design won’t shock you.
It’s got that sleek PS5 Slim vibe but with some stylish stripes on the sides. It’s like the PS5 hit the gym and came out with racing stripes—looking sharp, right?
Over on the official PlayStation blog, Hideaki Nishino from Sony gave us the updates on PS5 Pro’s performance features.
Let me hit you with the highlights:
Upgraded GPU
They’ve cranked up the GPU power with 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5.
It’s memory is 28% faster, so you can expect up to a 45% boost in rendering speed.
Advanced Ray Tracing
Imagine light reflecting off surfaces at double or even triple the speed of the regular PS5.
That’s what the upgraded ray tracing in the PS5 Pro is all about.
Picture the sun’s rays slicing through a dense forest, each beam dancing on the leaves—yeah, that’s the kind of visual feast we’re talking about.
AI-Driven Upscaling
Sony’s rolling out PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, a mouthful that means your games are going to look sharp, thanks to AI-driven upscaling.
It’s like giving your game a 4K makeover.
Pricing, Features and Release Date
The PS5 Pro will be priced at $699.99 / £699.99 / €799.99 / ¥119,980, and you can get your hands on it starting November 7, 2024.
It comes with a 2TB SSD (plenty of room for all those massive game installs), a DualSense wireless controller, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.
Oh, and if you like your console standing tall, the vertical stand’s sold separately—because why not?
Now, let’s talk options and features that this Mid 5th gen console have.
The PS5 Pro is all about going disc-less, but if you’re still clinging to your physical games—you have grab the existing PS5 disc drive separately.
It’s also packing Wi-Fi 7, so if you’re lucky enough to live in a place that supports it, your internet speeds just got a serious boost.
As for games, you’ll start seeing a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” tag on titles that take full advantage of the new hardware.
We’re talking big names like Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and many more. And don’t stress—all your PS5 games will still work on the PS5 Pro, and you’ll be using the same user interface and online community.
PS5 Pro also includes a Game Boost feature, promising better performance on over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games along with smoother gameplay and improved resolution on your favorite classics.
